Apologies for a slight derailing, but Andy, what's your beef with the Beta 58A? I like the 945 and the 967, I've never used the AE6100 but I'm generally agreeable to AT's mics. I have a few Beta 57A's that I like on live rock vocals if they're going to stay on a stand, and I've used 58A's and not wanted to self immolate.

I don't have any great love for them, I'm just curious about your obvious dislike.

For me, it's the B58's over-the-top proximity effect and its tendency to put sibilants through your forehead. The B57 is actually a very handy vocal mic, however.

Also, Andy said:

Your first IEM experience will be an epiphany - you will hear exactly what the mic "hears". You might find that what it hears is mostly the band behind you and not your whisper-y vocal.

It bears repeating. ALWAYS.

+1 on everything Andy said.

I just finished mixing a recording of a live show where the lead vocal was through a B58A. The sibilance was just ridiculous! And it's up there around 11k where it doesn't sound pleasant at all. I used to use B58A's for live sound at the club all the time, assuming they were a better version of the 58. Then I started trusting my ears and I've never picked up a B58 since. Put a 58 on the stand, cut bass to taste, and voila.

Some people come in with all their own mics and DIs and have the tones pre-balanced, and it's sweet. Other people just bring a guitar and rock the house with whatever I set up in front of them. Gear is always just icing on the cake. Don't try to make a club sound guy act like a studio engineer, because they will get frustrated and you will be disappointed. Just bring a good show that you feel confident about and have fun while you perform it!
