I just got an email with the frickin' chance of a lifetime. I'm gonna "make it!" I'll just pay the $200 for this *cough* amazing *hack* opportunity, then sit back and wait for the suits to line up to sign me!

Hi,
Would you like your song played on Nashville radio? Would you like a live on the air telephone interview on Nashville radio? I'm talking about a real VIP songwriter type of interview. You'll be able to talk about the story behind your song, why you wrote it and what it means to you. I can absolutely guarantee that this will happen, if you want it to happen.
This Nashville radio station streams its broadcast on the Internet, so anybody with an Internet connection can listen from anywhere on the planet. You can invite anybody you wish to tune in and hear your interview and song. It is re-broadcast by a 50,000 watt FM radio station, in Berlin, Germany. This re-broadcast adds tens of thousands of people to its audience. We're talking major promotion for you and your song!
Promotion is just another word for advertising and radio stations sell advertising. That is the key to taking advantage of this opportunity. The recession has caused many businesses to cut their advertising budget. Radio stations are all feeling the pinch. I have locked in a block of advertising time for a deeply discounted rate. That's why I am passing this time on to you for such a ridiculously low price.
Most songs are around three minutes long. Some are much longer and the live telephone interview uses up several minutes. When the economy picks up and businesses increase their advertising budgets this amazing deal won't be available. Under normal conditions, no radio station would sell valuable airtime this cheaply.
Not only will your interview be sent out live, it will be recorded and re-broadcast three (3) times before the end of this year. That's right. Your song and interview will be heard a total of four (4) times, before the end of this year. All for the ultra discounted price of just $200.
I even have a bonus for you! Email your request for the agreement before midnight November 8, 2009 and I will have your interview and song re-broadcast an additional two times. That's a total of six (6) times for the same deeply discounted price. The average song and interview will use about five (5) minutes of airtime per broadcast. Yours may be a little less or even more. It doesn't matter. I'm giving you thirty minutes or so of Nashville and world wide radio station time for only $200.

I like that there's no mention of whether it's actually broadcast on the air in Nashville! _________________ Larry Crane, Editor/Founder Tape Op Magazine

Man, that's cheap. I had a guy at KLSX in Los Angeles approach me with an offer for a weekend overnight, 1-hour slot for $5000!
It's so NOT what radio is about. The programming is NOT the commercial.
Corporate radio needs to get real. _________________ "Learn 12 songs, then get back to me" |

Why? Hell, even some major TV network affiliates in NYC play infomercials during the overnight hours, and that's allegedly The City That Never Sleeps.
I've wondered for years why there aren't more 1 or 2 hour specialty shows on radio that are framed as "The Jack's Music Shoppe New Music Hour" or something like that. Using the example of a record store I think it could be a cool way to showcase new releases. Another idea would be a local promoter or club doing a weekly show that features the upcoming bands that are playing in town; maybe have phone interviews, play some tracks, give away some free passes, have local bands come in and do in-studio performances where appropriate.
For a few years here in NJ there was a local station that was very involved with live music coming through the area. A funny thing happened: they helped to grow a really strong community around original music here. I don't know what didn't work in their situation - whether it was ad sales, or a management change, or what - but they stopped being involved and then they sort of lost relevance. Now they're a top 40 station, and they wouldn't know what to do with an original local band if they were handed a sheet of instructions.
I don't agree that radio can only be 5 Song Rock Blocks and then 3 minutes of commercials for mufflers and diamond engagement rings. |

In Nashville one of the co-owners of Grimeys, an independent record store, has a 1 hour show on Lightning 100, an independent radio station, on Saturdays to plays new indie release. It seems to work for them. The station also broadcast Music Business Radio, which is usually great, and shows from a local venue called 3rd and Lindsey.
However, most of the time the station is nothing special. Actually, it's a bit confusing because they don't really have a format. 23 hours out of the day the radio station plays Jack Johnson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Mayer, Kings of Leon, 70's-80's pop or rock (Tom Petty, Prince), some local artist that sound like the above mentioned and a sprinkling of indie stuff if someone request it during the lunch hour. _________________ I'm rockin' and rollin' with my rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roller. |
